Hello all My name is Danielle, I am new to these Boards, I have a son who is 3 and is develpmentally delayed , he has speech problems and social problems and much much more.. He is in school now in a pre-school disabled class and seems to like it he is only there for 2 1/2 hours 5 days a week... My main concern is that i am seeing his behavior get alot worse over the last 2 months.. He has about 10 to 15 meltdowns a day and is scared of loud noises always has his hands over his ears and the develpomental peds.offices are so backed up i am on a waiting list for 2 different doctors that are 12 to 18 months away.. In the mean time i am not sure how to handle him i am not sure if i am doing the right thing or not.. He is constanlty hitting me and hitting his brother who is 7 and bites and pinches and time out dosen't seem to work.. If anyone can give me some advice i would very much apprectaite it.. Thank you Danielel You might want to read a good Autism Book, My son is Asperger's so that what I mainly focus on, but I'm sure someone else will have a good book idea. Can the School make out a positive behavior plan for him to use at home and at School? Talk to the Autism people at School, see if they can help you. He might like to wear ear plugs too. usually stress makes my childs behavior worse, and his sensory issues worsen. I would call the local chapter of the Autism Society of AMerica and ask if they have any recommendations for the "go to" doctor in your area for autism diagnosis. Not all doctors are created equal. But you need to get your child screened for autism. Perhaps his preschool can point you in the right direction. The person should be a pediatric neurologist, child psychiatrist or a developmental pediatrician. Make SURE whoever you go to is familiar with autism. For right now, go to www.childbrain.com and answer the PDD assessment there. It will give you a much better idea of whether you ought to go further in searching out an autism dx. Of course, it's as accurate as your answers are, so be honest. Once you get an autism dx, helping your child with his behaviors will be easier because autistic kids respond to different techniques than ever other child responds to, even some dev. delayed kids. If you DO get the autism dx, get ABA for your son. They can use ABA techniques to help with behaviors, too, and make SURE you get parent training through his preschool. Thank you for the advice,,, Tzoya i went on the childbrain yesterday and did that pdd assesment and it said moderate pdd score was 146. So i printed that out to take with me to the appts.. I also called my ped today and want to talk with them about helping me deal with him also.. Like i stated earlier i have to wait so long to go to the dr.. i am very frustrated.. I have a question what is that aba you were talking about? Thanks a Bunch Danielle I actually talked with my son's ped today and they are requesting that my son go to a ped. Neurolglist as soon as possible so i will call and make appt and let you know how it goes.. Thanks A Bunch Danielle |
