NC people, info please | Autism PDD

Share

I am currently an ABA provider / Special Education Teacher birth -2nd grade in Long Island NY.  I would possibly consider moving to NC if I could find out more info about how home services and how SEIT(special education itinerant teacher) services work  SEIT is in a preschool or can be at home if a child is having difficulty but doesnt necessarily mean they are on the spectrum.

If you want you can PM me the details because I am looking for specifics like how much the teachers get paid per hourly case and stuff like that.  If there is a therapist that can tell me these things I would appreciate it because I was down there on vaccation a year ago and kept hitting dead ends, maybe these services are not the same as NY.

Questions:

1. Where would I go to get cases for ABA or SEIT are there a list of agencies?

2. What is the pay rate for CPSE per hour?

3.  What about EI services for children under 3 who are developmentally delayed?

4.  How easy is it to fill up a 25 hour case load?

Sorry for all of the questions but I figure maybe you guys might know this stuff the best since you deal with it.

I would suggest contacting the Autism Society of North Carolina.  They can be a great resource in general.  You did not mention a particular area of NC; we are central (about 20 miles south of Greensboro).  PM me if you'd like; we can talk about the difference in the set up here.

Mary

We have been in central (and rural) NC for 14 years.  From our experience, it seems most of the positive activities (schools, etc) are closer to Raleigh.  And as Payne's Mom mentioned, Raleigh has an international airport.

Frankly, services in and out of school can run hot and cold in NC.  My son is 12, diagnosed high functioning autistic with mild MR, and things were pretty good up until this school year.  Through elementary school, and with the blessing of qualifying for CAP (a special Medicaid program for children with disabilities), he has had a lot of intervention.  However, now that he is in middle school the one on one is not an option in school.

If you haven't found him already, Fred on this board is near Raleigh and seems to have done quite a bit of research.  He has twin girls with autism.

Mary

Hi There,

I was reading your posting, you said that you live in NC.

I am possibly relocating to NC. But I am trying to find out what state services are available there. So far I have narrowed down to NC,  or New Jersey

I am trying to gain a more informed understanding of services available to children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder's. I am aware that the provision entitlements vary significantly from state to state.

North Carolina, is at the moment one of our favorite choices as a state to relocate to from England, UK.

Let me introduce myself

My name is Amy, I have a 9 year old son with Autistic Spectrum Disorder who is pretty much non-verbal, . I live in the UK, my husband has been selected by his company to relocate to USA and work for their American company.

Which has branches throughout USA. However he does not have to live near these branches as his job involves directing and flying around them all.  I am now faced with the decision of choosing the best state and location for Special Autistic schools. My son currently attends a very good autistic school within the UK, which he loves, they use a TEACCH approach.

I have his diagnosis and all the UK required reports from the doctor, educational psychologist, special educational statement of needs etc. which we he has had done over the years, and show his abilities/disabilities.

Louis is a fantastic little boy who is very much loved by the staff. He is gentle, easy to manage and has no behaviour issues. He cannot speak very much, but can read, good on the computer and occupies his time appropriately. He likes and responds to makaton sign language and PECS/Visual supports. He will be very sadly missed by his current school.

Are you able to advise me of what state services that you are getting.

By choice we would prefer to be within 1 hour of an international airport but Primarily we need a good autistic school.

I would really appreciate if you could give me some advise because at the moment I am getting quite a negative picture from various people who my husband has spoken to who have autistic children.

I am sure that the facilities cant be that bad, but as it appears the UK seem to be streets ahead with special educational provision. I always had the impression that it was the USA who were paving the way.

I understand that in many states within the USA, ASD children are integrated into mainstream schools, and do not go to special schools. We have tried Louis at a good UK mainstream school, who were very accommodating, he had a full time learning support assistant for him alone who was very good with him, he also had a mealtime assistant. But this mainstream placement did not work, Louis needs a simple curriculum, and a visual environment with teachers that understand ASD, and after 1 1/2 years we had to get him into a more appropriate placement which we did, and we have not looked back the improvement is fantastic and his enthusiasm for going to school is a breath of fresh air.

I am now really anxious as my husband has been offered this work promotion and I am not going to take Louis out of this school into a provision which is mainstream. Therefore I am searching for something similar.

A special school, preferbly something which the state pays for, as my husband is a high earner in the UK and will also be in the USA, therefore will be a high tax payer.

However if this is not available then a will have to go down the private schooling approach. Which will be expensive.

I believe an autistic curriculum is imperrative. I do not favour ABA as I think it is to harsh an approach. I thought that I would look at North Carolina as there must be many schools here using TEACCH as it was founded in NC

If you are able to advise, list some schools, state and/or private or at least point me in the right direction I would be most grateful.

Although I have read up on how the system works in the USA and understand that I need to choose an area where we are going to live, but I need to know if there are any special schools first, if they are what I am looking for then obviously I will choose to live near that special school, which is why at this point I am not sure. The coast of NC sounds good but I am guessing probably less special schools there. I understand that Chapel Hill is suppose to be a good district.

We live in the counrtyside in the UK therefore we are not that used to cities, but the suburbs could be tolerable.

I understand that the state would provide transport for Louis to be taken to school by bus. (which in the UK Louis goes in a taxi with 3 other children and a carer, an hour trip to school, an hour back)

Please could you shed some light on this for me as I need some help, pointing me in the right direction. I have just been using a search engine to try and find the schools there must be a website that lists all special schools. Greatschool.net only seems to provide info for special schools if you know the name of them to begin with.

I look forward to your reply and welcome any help and support that you can give

Thank you

Amy

I hope this helps you Amy ... from the yellowpagesforkids.com

A couple more places I found googling.

Thank you so much, that is so helpful I will have a look at all of these links.

Judging by this the services in NC must be good ?????

I like the look of NC because it looks similar to the UK, probably similar climate but warmer in the summer. Cheap state taxes I guess. Property looks good value for money.

My husband favours NC, we have never been and intend on visiting this July/August.

Any ideas on where to head for.

We are used to living in a semi rural position. Currently we live 1 mile out of a small village, have lots of space and countryside around us but are 7 miles from a city. Best of both worlds.

I need to be cose to an international airport so my husband can fly all around america.

Close to services for ASD, and also in a good school district so my normal functioning kids. 2 buys 7 year old and a 3 year old can attend a good school.

At the moment its eennee, meeennee, minnee, mmoo, close your eyes touch the map and this is where we'll go.

No seriously the outskirts of Raleigh look like they are quite good with asd, Chapel hill, seems to be an area that everyone raves about. I like the idea of the coast. But where who knows. I am going to have to take some time surfing the internet, and familiarising myself with NC

Thanks

Amy

Charlotte & Raleigh have the big airports.
