Braces? (dental) | Autism PDD

Also know- that I have to brush Jeremy's teeth as his teeth are still sensitive- and his teeth are no more sensitive with the braces on....

Good luck.

Our son, Jeremy, has braces - and got them on on Sept 21. It took a yr to get the molds of the teeth- and after much talking about it, social stories about it, pictures, etc, etc- Jeremy said in July of 06 that he was ready- out of the blue.

Jeremy is a very picky, highly sensory, oral motor, etc, etc, - but did not bat an eyelash. We have a local orthodontist- and he did the impressions(molds) of his teeth- and although it took a couple tries- we did it- and Sept 21- he got them. He was sore for a day or two- but is able to swallow an Advil, after much talking him thru it. Jer is very verbal, and this was tough for him.  We choose in our house to pick our battles- but we let Jeremy sort of lead us on this. We did not make him do it - and he appeared to truly understand what would be done. He also has a top set of braces, and a retainer GLUED in on the bottom. This was all done in the same day.  We were lucky. Our developmental dr. told us a couple of weeks ago- that this was BIG for him. His teeth are so straight.  Good luck.

Does anyone have any advice or stories about having braces put on your child's teeth? Our hygienist wants our son to have an eval for braces. He has a really hard time with having dental work done because of sensory and sensitive gag reflex. We had to have him hospitalized a couple of years ago to have all of his dental work done because of his issues but also because he had a BAD

If anyone else has any thoughts I would greatly appreciate it.
