Hello everyone. This is my first blog post.
A business associate of mine posted a article to his blog that I couldn’t believe.
Are you familiar with the show Survivor where members of a team vote someone off the island? You also know how bad a person feels when they get voted off right?
Well you won’t believe this but a teacher in a class asked the kids in the class to select which child to vote out of their class. That child happened to have autism.
I’ll be surprised if this doesn’t outrage you.

Wow this is really bad
I teach students 3 to 5 years old who have the label of autism. Many parents push for their children to be put into mainstream classroom because they wish for that child to have peer models. It sad that the two students who wanted the young boy to stay in the class had more understanding about being a little different then the teacher did.
I am the father of two boys with autism. One high functioning as this young man is and one on the sever end of the scale. Bryce is always telling me about how mean the other kids in his class are with the exception of a couple. It will only get worse in the coming years, Bryce will go to the 4th grade next year and is in a typical classroom. Ryan is in a multihandicap classroom, he does not have expressive language and his language skills are limited the that of a three year old, he is 10. Bryce is this trusting, caring, loving child that can not hate or even understand the concept of hating someone. I am going to attempt to let him do what he needs to do in order to get through life, if he needs help, I will be there to guide and/or pick him up if he falls. He does have a couple of friends in the class that look out for him and I am happy for that.
One problem with freedom of choice is that some people wind up doing what they are mentally unqualified for. She has no right to be around children and should be classed with the child abusers.

A couple of weeks ago I read this story about the teacher with no brains or heart. Made me so angry I could spit nails. I still cry over it. Just thank God my grandson’s teacher for 4 years is wonderful to all of her children. I really hope and pray our teacher this next year is as good for my boy’s growing and learning. He loves school and I really want him to continue loving school. He spent 4 years with one teacher…sure hope he adjusts as well as everyone thinks he will. Just as long as he does not get a teacher like the one in the horrible article.
This does not surprise me in the least. I was a teaching assistant at a school district and had a teacher tell me point blank that she did not want my son in her class and would do everything that she could to make his life miserable. By month 4 with her as his teacher, I demanded a transfer to another school in the district. I got the move (we eventually moved out of the district)but my son still feels like he did something wrong and not the teacher. School administrators need to be aware that sensitivity training needs to be given to all teachers in the district, since most high functioning autistic children are mainstreamed, and in turn, to students at all schools. My son has had to put up with name calling from children that if it was a racial slur, the school would have suspended the offender. But apparently, calling an autistic child “retarded” is not offensive enough for the schools to get involved with. I truly feel that this was a teacher using her chance for getting rid of a student that she did not want to deal with. Of course, now you have the district getting parents to say how “beloved” this woman is and how everyone just loves her. Does not say much for the character of the parents of these children. I say vote this teacher off the island permanently.
I say, send the teacher to special program so she can learn about autism and get rid of her ignorance about special children along with the principal, and then send her also to bible classes and for sure the word of God will change her to be a better person and a better teacher and until this happens this HORRIBLE woman should NOT be allow to teach children.
This article made me cry. That teacher should be fired immediately! This is the same kind of thing my son was subjected to in Public schools – mostly prior to being diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, but also received poor treatment after diagnosis too. He graduated from high school last year, but my pain goes back to his first days of Kindergarten, when it became apparant he was different.
My heart was broken so many times throughout his school days I can’t even count. He tried to kill himself in 4th grade due to the treatment from the other kids at school.
My pain is too deep to go into in this short space, but my heart goes out to the Mom of this child.
My advice to her – don’t give up until you get that teacher fired!
On the plus side, my son made his first friends as a Junior and Senior in high school. (After years of therapy and special ed ever since 4th grade when he tried to kill himself).
He was very open with them about his condition, and if your child can survive past the Middle School years, high school students do seem to be more tolerant, especially when they understand the condition.
But I will say it is a constant struggle with the education system, teachers and society in general when you have a child with Autism.
Good luck and give your son a hug for me.
This is a terrible thing that happened. Children can surely be cruel at times. I have seen such a history with my grandson that I must say I am not surprised that the children would select the child with Autism, because they don’t understand why that child acts like he does. He is of course different, children don’t understand people who are different. My grandson has very limited social skills, and did go through a hard time in regular school classes with the teachers and the other children. A lot of times I felt so sorry for him. We thought the children were picking on him constantly, which may have been, however, he too would lash out at them. He was always getting into fights. He doesn’t understand his being different either. I thank God for a special teacher he had at a new school he went too. This teacher recognized that he had problems that were associated with Autism, and consequently, he was tested. He has Asperger’s Syndrome. The day cares he was in, and all the teachers he previously had ,at another school never recognized that he had this disease. He was just thrown out of day cares, and suspended from school over and over. This is so unfair, as is the story in your blog. I believe ALL people who become daycare owners, workers and ALL school teachers should go through training on what to look for in problem children, so they may be tested for Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome. This would be a blessing for these children that have not yet been diagnosed. They endure so much mental pain and punishment from parents and teachers, because NO ONE KNOWS they have the disease. My grandson was 9yrs old be they found out he had this. These children do act out. because they get frustrated. God Bless all these precious children, and make people more educated on how to deal with this disease.
Thank You for listening A grandmother of a child of Asperger’s.

Hello everyone to me when my son goes to a doctors visit where there are other children and he is having a tantrum they look at him say he is being bad. We were at the dentist office the other day and River has been their before do you know they put him in a room with six other patients Production Line
and he flipped out It took four people to hold him down and he is three just for the dentist to look inside his mouth after five minutes I said that was enough Stop It. You could hear his arms cracking
do you know that they were clueless of him having Autism and it was the
same Dentist he has seen for the last three times. I also belive that more schools need to emphasise on children and adult with special needs.
Should be part of a character building class I have always tried to treat everyone the same and make sure my children know that everyone is beautifull in their own way and my children will tell people how beautiful that they are on their own accord. I think if maybe schools should be in tune and take the time to install positive thoughts towards everyone at a young age then maybe everyone would be able to thoughtful of all mankind we come from the same creator. We all should love everyone the same. Lets make our children more brave and let them know what Autism is and that it is okay. Let them be more aware of What Autism is and how it does affect a child. The most damaging thoughts could come from not knowing what or how something is preceived whcich is no different then how our children learn.
I am shocked to hear about this. For this to happen to any child no matter of a delay or disease this is wrong. These are times in there lives when we should be encourging them and building htere self-esteem and showing the peers of hte other children in the classrooms what ethics and morals are good behavior and not bad. We have enough bullys in this world already that our kids have to deal with as do we. We dont need to teach these kids how to. Children with a austim spectrum disorder have enough issues and things to over come we are suppose to help them not give them more to deal with. I hated hearing about this, i would be just as outraged as the mother if this happened to my child my son is only 3 so i just pray that i dont have to live with that kind of trama on my son. ( my son has PDD) The Teacher and the Administrator should be held responable for this event. They are suppose to protect those kids will they are in school. And the admin should know what is going on i the class room it is both there faults. I hope that the teacher is never able to teach again k-12 or college. That is not hte type of rolemodel we need around our kids.
This is an extreme example of how reality shows like Survivor have desensitized many young adults from considering the feeings of other people. There is no compassion or understanding or patience or concern for the esteem or welfare of a person’s heart and soul in shows like this. It demonstrates that “self” is all that matters and when someone interferes with what inconveniences “me” then that person is disposed of. How sad. I am a teacher of young children with special needs and I am so sorry that this happened.
That teacher is so ignorant he is lucky i’m not that parent of that child because he would be fired. I’m a parent of an autistic child and i’m FURIOUS. He should be kick out for being the worst teacher in history. JERK!!!!!!!
I mostly outraged at the teacher that allowed this to happen. Her credentials should be taken away. Teachers are supposed to protect and educate our kids, what kind of education was she showing the students in her class? I would love to ask the teacher in person.
Outrage does not begin to tell you how I felt after reading the article.
Unfortunately, the more our kids are mainstreamed, the more I think situations like this will happen. What kind of “ADULT” is this lady? Disgusting display of ignorance!
My son, THANK GOD, has been extremely lucky. His peers in his general ed class have been more than excepting of him. They know he is “different” and they look out for him and try to help him stay on task. He just finished Kinder so he has a long way to go but I am hoping nothing close to this happens in his future.
