My 17 month old daughter, who thus far has been NT, has recently begun "flapping" when excited. Is this something NT kids do? My 3 year old does this quite often when excited also. Could she simply be imitating him?
Always something to worry about....
My oldest two children when they were babies DID flap and they are both NT. It didn't last long though...it was very short lived. My 16 month old....I thought recently that he was flapping and it scared me terribly and then my husband had to tell me that No he's not flapping....he's waving bye bye....God you know???? Sometimes I get sooo caught up in the Autism thing and expecially since my baby has a communication delay I always am looking for the next ball to drop on my head. Anyway...with my oldest two children yes they flapped when excited but like I said they grew out of it quickly.

I never noticed any of myNT kids flapping, but the autie kid doesn't either.
My PDD-NOS son never flapped but I've seem SOME NT kids flap. Usually they are young (preschool or younger) and they are VERY excited about something. I've even seen NT adults flap their hands (when either excited or confused), particularly women.Well I don't see why any of us mind anyway. Right?
If it makes you feel good, why not? I really think everyone needs to let them be a lot more. And even if you tried to stop it, the child would switch to another form of showing excitement I think.
Let em be.
My kids all hand flapped and I see kids everywhere doing it when they are excited.
My daughter and her friends (all teenage girls) hand flap wildy when they are excited.
It's just not excessive.

Sorry!
I didn't mean SCARY scary! I hope you didn't think that. I just had a second to respond and I meant scary as in thoughts of my second child struggling like I see my first.
NOT scary as in 'WOW! He's hand flapping! That's SCARY!
Of course not!!
Gosh, the internet sure can be hard to communicate without totally explaining all the time!
Hope I didn't offend anyone!
GOOD question.
I'm noticing my 2 year old start flapping his arms now when he's excited. It's a scary thing!!
We actually asked our EI therapist about this.
I wanted to teach Gabriel to hold out his ams and flap like a bird or hold them out strait like an airplane.
Our therapist said playing games like this with an asd child can lead to them stimming off their arms and she said to wait until he was older.
Neither of my children flap their arms and two are asd and one nt.
Only my ASD son flapped his hands when excited, but it was only for a short time. None of my other four children flapped when excited, they clapped and jumped up and down instead. Chase rarely flaps his hands. Every now and again he will but it is a one time thing. Anna never flapped either, I think maybe at 15 months I saw it a couple of times, but it only lasted for about a week.
