Baby bumble Bee video | Autism PDD

Share

My SIL is a nurse and bought a set for the boys when they were about 2. I had never heard of them before. They did not really understand the concept of language at that time, these helped them understand that things had names. They were fascinated by them, and this is where they really started to pick up words and understand that objects had names and understand language. It helped them alot. They are now 4 and we still watch them. They get very excited when I put them in. Now they go up to the screen and "read" the words. I also bought them a brainy baby video which is very similiar and tackles things like numbers and colors, that has helped too. I also have a daughter that is not autistic and she watched the videos with her brothers and was talking before she was a year old. They like the baby einstein too but they watch those more for entertainment, for language building these are much better. They are definitely worth the investment I would definitely recommend them.

Hello

I am JuJu's mom. My son was diagnosed with PDD about 6 months ago. He is 2 years old. He is currently undergoing intensive early intevension therapy. he has a ot, st and a special instructor.

I recently was searching the web and came across baby bumble bee videos. The state they can help children with pdd develop langauge skills with in a week. My son has a 2 speech therapist one at home and one at school.

He currently says E I E I 0. Its really cute, at this point, I happy with any letters or words that he speaks.

I guess, i am looking for anyone who has experienced using these videos. Have they helped increase the vocabulary.

I have bought the Leapfrog letter factory ones (one on letter sounds and one on combination of letters like 'CH' ) and Harris loves those...I hope they are helping.  He is making new sounds this week....so maybe.

My son is also PDD and 2 1/2.

JuJu's Mom,

Can I also ask- how often do have his therapy- just wondering if we are "intensive" enough.  Harris has OT and ST each one time per week.  Not sure it is enough?  Who advised you?

JuJu

My son has a lot of the bumble  bee videos.  The ST  told us that they are the best and she is right.

They are great for repititon and words.

However, I must warn you when he gets to like them they can be hard to get him away from them. (eye candy)

My advice in moderation is good

All the best

I purchased the vocabulary and alphabet builder. The tapes are around .99. Not so bad.

JuJu's mom,

I also recommend picture cards.  Our son learned a lot of language skills from them.  We used animals and he absolutely loved them.

thanks guys. I really happy with the feedback. I truly appreciate it

Finaning -  I did order the picture cards. I plan to dedicate 1 hour when with JuJU and his twin. From the web site, it stated the cards help.

Cin0516 - Hi, I live in New York, once my son was officially diagnosed by a psychologist , he was offered all kinds of services. He goes to early intervention daycare from 8:30am - 10:45am 5 days a week. At school he recieves speech 4 times a week for a 1/2 hour each session. Ot  3 times a week for 1 hour each session. Special instruction 4 times a week.  He also recieves additional speech and ot therapy meet him at the babysitter. The st comes 4 times for a half hour, ot for feeding therapy.

JuJu39132.6395601852Ot feeding therapy at the baby sitter is 4 times a week at 1 hourI know that some magizines say that TV may be one of the causes in Autism.  But if that were true there would  more of us that became that way.  I mean if you took a poll on 100 children about 75% child after school  watch Tv from the time they get home till they go to bed depending whats on.   And know some people have cartoons 24 hours a day.  My son has learned a lot from Baby Einstein and from us as well.  We are so  amazed when he tries to talk o r  when  he says a word.  We tell him how prowd   we are of him.  And to see his smile when he nows he did something good melts my heart.  Its the best thing in the world.

We use the baby bumblebee dvd's and my son really does pick up a lot from them. It also helps to reinforce concepts we do in therapy like opposites. I also prefer them to the baby Einstein because those were so visually distracting - these are not. I found this site that offers them for the cheapest I've ever seen them. We ordered ours from there and received them - no problems. Just make sure you look carefully to see if you are purchasing the DVD or video. There are 2 pages of selections. http://www.allegro-music.com/search_results.asp

Also, when my son was not yet producing a full sound repetoire and very few words, I found baby babble to be a good starting point. http://www.talkingchild.com/video.aspx

I dont think my dd would be as verbal as she is if it wasnt for the cartoons. She repeats alot of what she hears of there and slowly over time it clicks into what she is doing and what she has heard. She is still learning and will definelty look into getting those tapes. Are they good to start at any age? She is 31 months old.

My son was also diagnosed at 18 months.  He has the leap frog letter and word factory and the bumble bee videos.  He received speech 3xs/ wk and special ed 3xs/ wk until this past October when we enrolled him in an ABA preschool 25 1/2 hours per week.  The videos do help.  Let him watch them even if he does not start saying the words...give it time.  He is probably still absorbing what he is seeing.

A month ago I bought the first video in the "Watch Me Learn" series.  All I can say is WOW!!!  The things he has learned from watching that video...and he can transfer or apply all of it.  He has started pointing for the first time (we have been trying to teach him that for a year) and his receptive language is really taking off.  He is still mostly only using his vocabulary to label things...but we are slowly getting him to meaningfully answer yes or no and he is starting to follow directions...ie "pick that up please".

The studies that refer to "intensive" are saying 40 hours per week.  We have never gotten our son to that level...but have found that the reinforcement that my husband and I give to the therapy visits is crucial in getting James to understand that this is not something you do when you are at school or when a therapist is here.

Good Luck

Baby bumblebee are one of the best tapes we used to get language & understanding from Sarah.  Get the first one and you will be sold on the rest:) Try your video store or library to see if they have them.  The more they watch the more they learn the words.  We had all of them but I passed them on to her consultant for new parents.  They are pricey but compared to ABA therapists at /hour and speech @ /hr. they are priceless:)

Sarah learned sometimes more from watching videos and modeling them than hours and hours of ABA or speech therapy.. I am a true believer in doing what works...these work:)  I also love the Modelmekids.com videos for playdates, and school and "I can do it." If your child is a visual learner and stubborn when "real" people try and teach them then these videos are perfect!

Blessings,

Shelley

I would say yes, like I said my boys are 4 and its still their favorite. It is very boring for us adults, they put an object on the tv and say what it is about 5 times, and they put the word on the screen. They do this for so many objects, then they do it again, and again and again.... ugh. and they look low budget. Both DH and I were like whatever, but the difference they made were pretty amazing. We were pleased. you can pick up a brainy baby at toys rus, its pretty much the same thing, that way you know if it is something she would like before you invest. Please check out the link I posted earlier. You can buy them for 11.99 and some are 14.99 but still better than 19.99. Just do a search for baby bumblebee. You should get about 2 pages of stuff. Look carefully to see whether it is a DVD or video.bumpity bumpWe bought the whole set when John was diagnosed and it definately stimulated his language!!!  We used them for years as he learned his labels.  A very worthwhile investment!!!

agree here, too.

and Signing Time DVD's are alot like the Bbumblebee--but teach sign language. GREAT!

My girl didn't really like them until she was right about 3, though. So be prepared for that.

Oh that leapfrog letter factory video is priceless too! that taught them the alphabet. They not only know the letter but the sounds they make so they are way ahead in that area. I think I want to try that watch me learn video. Could you tell me what that is like? Is it similiar to the baby bumble bee?
