Baby is smacking his lips -- is that OK? | Autism PDD

I don't mean to be an alarmist, but keep a close eye on him.  Lip smacking is very common in infant and adolescent seizures.  If he is zoning out when he does this, consult a doctor right away.

My son did this from birth, and he is a great breastfeeder! He is now almost nine months, and will NOT take a bottle. I hope to go straight to a cup, if all goes well. My asd son had an easier time with a bottle and quit at 4 monthes. Seems ok, and don't worry too much. You know your kids and you know the signs. When he turns one you could also get an EI eval just to be sure.

I worry too, but I try not to miss these precious molments we have now. I wish you the best!

My son sucked his bottom lip aaaall the time when he was born and as a little baby so much that people thought that was just how he looked or something! Ive never heard of it and his doctors never said anything about it so I dont know, altho my son does have sensory issues i didnt know about. If it worries u it doesnt hurt to ask his pediatrician about it.

Yes, it is completely typical.

I have posted here many times about my overwhelming worry (actually thinking about going on Zoloft for it) that my new baby could get ASD like his brother.  Yosef is now almost six months.  The last couple days, he has started smacking his lips (actually, it is more like sucking his lower lip).  I don't remember other babies doing that.  It is not all the time but enough that it worries me.  (I think he is starting to teeth b/c he is mouthing everything.  He also just started solid foods.)

Is lip smacking in babies (a) normal (b) could be a sign of ASD -- maybe a stimmy kind of thing or (c) I need to be checked in to a home because I have completely lost my mind?

Thanks

Raquel
